Arthur Hayes has given the clearest timing signal since TOKEN2049. In an October 11 post on X, quoted in full by BeInCrypto, he wrote that he was "back on the grid so we can ship FLOP Testnet in a few weeks." Lookonchain carried the same update. At TOKEN2049 a week earlier, CoinNess reported that Hayes said the testnet would launch in October and run for 90 days, with mainnet in Q1 2027.
"A few weeks" from October 11 is consistent with the "late October" target Flop Labs has used before, but it is not a date. The official testnet page still says only "Q4 2026" and that the testnet "opens when its readiness criteria are met, and may be extended if they are not." Our testnet guide tracks the timeline.
Ask FLOP: official docs, but for the devnet
Flop has also put up Ask FLOP, a documentation assistant on its own flop.finance domain. It describes itself as answering questions about "the published FLOP Network documentation", with "every answer cited or refused". Behind it sits a library of about two dozen pages covering proof of useful inference, tokenomics, staking and slashing, governance, and operator guides for validators, miners and GPU providers.
The important detail is the label on every page: "devnet · next · development". The operator guides describe the team's private development network, not a public testnet.
- The operator overview says the instructions "do not announce a public network launch or certify a currently running network."
- The miner guide says, as of September 29, it covers "devnet development only" and "does not promise mainnet participation or earnings." It requires access to a private devnet and private software images, which outsiders can't get yet.
- The testnet status page reads "Status: planned. Unavailable until published network identity, artifacts, and admission policy are verified."
In other words, you can read how mining and validating will work, but you can't join yet. If you're preparing a GPU, our mining guide and validator guide cover the hardware.
What the docs add on the airdrop
The airdrop and testnet conversion page restates the rules on the official airdrop page and adds a few specifics:
- Testnet miners are allocated from a 1,200,000,000 FLOP miner pool, scored on verified compute served. Completed job count, active days and held balances "carry no weight".
- Miners get a quarter of their grant liquid at genesis. The rest unlocks one FLOP for every FLOP earned serving inference on mainnet.
- Validator grants stay locked until the first halving, then release over 1,000 days.
- Locked agent airdrop can only be spent on compute, and its release schedule is not yet set.
The page says these rules are "ratified but not yet built" and that the genesis distribution ceremony "is not yet wired". Treat them as the current plan, not final terms.
Beware fake addresses
The guides use placeholder hostnames ending in .invalid (for example rpc.flop.invalid) for services that aren't public yet, and the docs warn that these "will not connect to FLOP." Anyone offering you a "testnet RPC", miner image or early client before the official launch is not Flop Labs. See our scam warnings.
What to do now
- Follow @flop_labs and the official testnet page for the launch announcement.
- If you plan to mine, check your GPU against the hardware guide and register interest only through flop.finance.
- Don't buy anything sold as FLOP. There is no token sale, and testnet tokens have no value.
