Arthur Hayes and Flop: his role, talks and key quotes
Arthur Hayes is CEO of Flop Labs, the team behind $FLOP. A sourced, dated timeline of his Flop talks, interviews and posts, his key quotes and where to watch.
Arthur Hayes is the public face of Flop Network, and many people first hear about $FLOP through him. That's why searches like "Arthur Hayes Flop" and "Arthur Hayes Flop coin" are common. This page collects what's on the record: his role, a dated timeline of his Flop appearances and posts, and the main arguments he makes. Every item links to its source. Flop Network News is independent and isn't affiliated with Flop Labs or Hayes.
What is Arthur Hayes' role at Flop Labs?
Hayes describes himself on X as "CEO of @Flop_Labs & CIO @Maelstromfund" (profile). Unchained introduced him the same way, as CEO of Flop Labs and CIO of Maelstrom, when he unveiled Flop on Laura Shin's podcast in August 2026. CNBC calls him the former BitMEX CEO and the co-founder and chief investment officer of the crypto investment firm Maelstrom. BeInCrypto reported that Hayes, a BitMEX co-founder, "left retirement to lead Flop Labs in August", and that he says he funded the team himself.
The official documents split the project in two. According to the whitepaper, Flop Labs LLC is the operating company that designed and built the network, and it's paid through a fixed block emission. The Flop Foundation stewards the protocol. See What is FLOP? for how the network works.
Is FLOP "Arthur Hayes' coin", and can you buy it?
Not yet. Real $FLOP first exists at the genesis block, which is targeted for Q1 2027 (provisional). The flop.finance homepage says "No pre-sale" and "No VCs". At the Singapore launch, Flop Labs put it bluntly: "Nobody can buy $FLOP from us. Mine it or buy it from someone who did." A token sold today with Hayes' name or face on it isn't the real FLOP. What a great @token2049. I got some youthful energy with cellular medicine from @VeritaHealthHQ and then dropped the thinking behind @flop_labs all week. Now it’s back on the grid so we can ship FLOP Testnet in a few weeks.

— Arthur Hayes (@CryptoHayes) October 11, 2026What Hayes argues
Agents need money that converts into compute. Hayes told CNBC: "If agents can convert a currency directly into compute, which is what they eat and consume, then they will use this currency. That's our bet." On the OKX mainstage, according to Flop Labs' summary, he argued that dollars, USDT, BTC and AI tokens are all "human money wearing an agent's mask".
The AI build-out will overshoot. He told CNBC that humanity is "wasting multi-trillion dollars" on AI data centres and that the test could come in late 2027 or 2028. Flop Labs turned that into its supply thesis: Hayes' "bear case for AI is our bull case for idle GPUs." That's why the mining guide matters to GPU owners.
Tokens should be earned, not sold. Flop follows what the team calls Bitcoin's rule: "do the work, or buy from someone who did" (our write-up). There's no presale and no investor allocation. The genesis supply is the testnet airdrop.
A "constitutional monarchy" to start. Until the first halving, only the Flop Foundation can submit protocol proposals, but validators still have to approve every one. The whitepaper says Hayes "has described this interim openly as a constitutional monarchy for the network's first two years." See FLOP validators.
Big ambitions, unproven. BeInCrypto reports that Hayes cites Reed's Law to argue Flop could one day be worth more than Bitcoin. It also notes that no published model backs that claim. Treat it as his opinion, not a forecast.
