Flop vs Aethir: enterprise GPU cloud vs agent inference
Flop vs Aethir: Aethir's live enterprise GPU cloud for AI and gaming (ATH) vs Flop's draft AI-agent inference chain. Verification roles, tokens, airdrops, backers.
Flop Network and Aethir both pay GPU owners in a token, so people compare them. This page is a neutral, sourced comparison, not investment advice. All Flop figures come from draft documents. The Yellow Paper isn't final yet, and $FLOP hasn't launched. For background, see What is FLOP? and the full comparison of AI compute projects.
Verdict
Aethir is a live, enterprise-focused GPU cloud for AI and cloud gaming. Flop is a pre-launch, permissionless chain for AI agents buying inference. Aethir aggregates enterprise-grade GPUs (Aethir docs), while Flop wants any capable GPU to serve agents. There's also a link between the two: Arthur Hayes's family office Maelstrom joined Aethir's 2023 Pre-A round (The Block).
Side by side
| Flop Network ($FLOP), draft | Aethir (ATH) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Layer-1 chain where AI agents pay GPU miners for verified inference ("proof of useful inference") | Distributed cloud of enterprise-grade GPUs for AI training and inference, cloud gaming and real-time rendering |
| How compute is verified | Optional TEE attestation, TOPLOC activation fingerprints, random re-execution by checkers, slashable stake | Three roles: Containers run workloads, Checkers verify the Containers' integrity and performance, and Indexers match users to Containers |
| Token | $FLOP, not launched; genesis targeted for Q1 2027 (provisional) | ATH (ERC-20 on Ethereum; some rewards paid on Arbitrum); launched June 12, 2024 |
| Launch status | Pre-testnet; testnet planned for Q4 2026 | Live mainnet since June 2024 |
| How to participate / earn | Testnet work as a miner (16 GB+ VRAM GPU recommended), validator (1.2M FLOP stake, up to 1,000 seats) or agent | Provide GPUs as a Container or Aethir Edge, run a Checker Node, or stake ATH |
| Backers | Flop Labs LLC and the Flop Foundation; homepage says "No VCs" and "No pre-sale"; Arthur Hayes is the public face | Framework Ventures, Merit Circle, Hashkey, Animoca Brands and others; Maelstrom (Arthur Hayes) joined the 2023 Pre-A round |
Key differences
- Supply. Aethir targets enterprise GPUs and gaming (docs). Flop is open to any miner with a 16 GB+ VRAM GPU (recommended).
- Verification. Aethir uses separate Checker nodes. In Flop's draft, verification is built into each inference session: TEE, TOPLOC, re-execution and slashing.
- Airdrop. Aethir reserved 6% of its 42bn ATH supply for airdrops over three seasons (Aethir blog). Flop's 4.4bn genesis allocation goes only to verified testnet work, with no claim window (airdrop guide).
- Funding. Aethir is VC-backed (Aethir FAQ). Flop says "No VCs".
Who each is for
- Aethir suits AI and gaming companies that need enterprise GPUs, and node or Checker operators on a live network.
- Flop suits GPU owners and agent builders targeting the testnet and its genesis allocation.
FAQ
Is Arthur Hayes involved in Aethir?
His family office Maelstrom took part in Aethir's 2023 Pre-A round, according to The Block. Hayes is the public face of Flop. These are separate projects.
How does Aethir verify compute compared with Flop?
Aethir uses Checker nodes to verify the integrity and performance of the Containers that run workloads. Flop's draft verifies each inference result with optional TEE attestation, TOPLOC fingerprints, random re-execution and slashable stake.
Do Aethir and Flop both have airdrops?
Aethir reserved 6% of the ATH supply for airdrop seasons. Flop's genesis allocation is earned only through verified testnet work, with no claim window. See the FLOP airdrop guide.
