Flop vs Akash Network: decentralized cloud vs agent inference
Flop vs Akash Network compared: Akash's live decentralized cloud marketplace (AKT) vs Flop's draft inference chain for AI agents. Verification, tokens, earning, status.
Flop Network and Akash Network both pay GPU owners in a token, so people compare them. This page is a neutral, sourced comparison, not investment advice. All Flop figures come from draft documents. The Yellow Paper isn't final yet, and $FLOP hasn't launched. For background, see What is FLOP? and the full comparison of AI compute projects.
Verdict
Akash is a live, general-purpose decentralized cloud. Flop is a not-yet-launched chain built for one job: AI agents buying verified inference. If you want to rent or sell GPU or server capacity today, Akash runs now. Flop is for people who want to take part in its testnet and the airdrop it leads to. They solve different problems.
Side by side
| Flop Network ($FLOP), draft | Akash Network (AKT) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Layer-1 chain where AI agents pay GPU miners for verified inference ("proof of useful inference") | Decentralized cloud marketplace: providers bid to host any Docker container (web apps, databases, AI training and inference) |
| How compute is verified | Optional TEE attestation, TOPLOC activation fingerprints, random re-execution by checkers, slashable stake | Provider attributes declared on-chain; optional audits by a trusted auditor (signedBy) and an official provider audit with a benchmark workload |
| Token | $FLOP, not launched; genesis targeted for Q1 2027 (provisional) | AKT (staking, governance, gas) plus ACT, a USD-pegged compute credit used to pay providers |
| Launch status | Pre-testnet; testnet planned for Q4 2026 | Live mainnet (Cosmos SDK chain) |
| How to participate / earn | Testnet work as a miner (16 GB+ VRAM GPU recommended), validator (1.2M FLOP stake, up to 1,000 seats) or agent | Run a provider and win leases, or run a validator node |
| Backers | Flop Labs LLC and the Flop Foundation; homepage says "No VCs" and "No pre-sale"; Arthur Hayes is the public face | Developed and largely funded by Overclock Labs since 2016 (per Akash's own roadmap) |
Key differences
- Scope. Akash hosts almost anything that runs in a container (docs). Flop only does inference sessions for agents (whitepaper).
- Verification. On Akash, trust in a provider comes from declared attributes and optional auditors. Akash's docs say that "no governance is available to ensure that the attributes declared by the provider are actual or valid" without an auditor (audited attributes). Flop's draft design verifies each inference result cryptographically and economically.
- Pricing. Akash uses a reverse auction: providers bid and the deployer picks one. On Flop, the agent's session request names a fee in $FLOP.
- Status. Akash is live. Flop's genesis is targeted for Q1 2027.
Who each is for
- Akash suits developers who need affordable cloud or GPU capacity now, and operators with data-centre-grade hardware (the official audit asks for 64+ cores, 128 GiB RAM and 500 Mbps; see the provider audit).
- Flop suits GPU owners and agent builders who want to earn the genesis allocation through testnet work. See how to mine FLOP and the airdrop checklist.
FAQ
Is Flop a competitor to Akash?
Partly. Both sell GPU compute, but Akash is a general cloud marketplace for any container, while Flop is a draft protocol only for paid AI inference requested by agents.
Which token pays providers, AKT or FLOP?
On Akash, deployments are funded with ACT, a USD-pegged compute credit you get by burning AKT or by card, according to Akash's docs. On Flop, miners will be paid in $FLOP, which doesn't exist until genesis (targeted for Q1 2027).
Can I use the same GPU for both?
Each network has its own hardware rules. Flop recommends GPUs with 16 GB+ VRAM per unit. Akash providers run Kubernetes-based infrastructure. Check each project's current docs before you commit hardware.
