Flop vs Bittensor: how the two AI networks differ

A sourced comparison of Flop Network ($FLOP) and Bittensor (TAO): what each network pays for, the roles of miners and validators, verification and launch status.

Flop Network and Bittensor both pay GPU owners in a token, so people compare them. This page is a neutral, sourced comparison, not investment advice. All Flop figures come from draft documents. The Yellow Paper isn't final yet, and $FLOP hasn't launched. For background, see What is FLOP? and the full comparison of AI compute projects.

Verdict

Bittensor is a live network of many subnets, each producing a different digital commodity. Flop is a single-purpose, pre-launch chain where AI agents pay GPU miners for verified inference. Bittensor describes itself as "an open network where independent subnets produce digital commodities — compute, inference, storage, prediction" (docs). Flop has a single product.

Key differences

  1. Scope. Flop has one product: paid inference for agents. Bittensor is a marketplace of many subnets.
  2. Demand side. Flop puts the agent buying compute at the centre of the protocol. Its fee split, 85% to the miner and 15% to validators, comes from paid sessions.
  3. Roles. Bittensor has subnet creators and stakers. Flop has agents and brokers, who share part of the block reward, and stakers, who get 5%.
  4. Launch. $FLOP doesn't exist yet. Its genesis supply comes from testnet work, not a sale. See is FLOP launched?

Who each is for

  • Bittensor suits builders who want to design or join a subnet with its own incentive game, on a live network.
  • Flop suits GPU owners and agent builders preparing for the testnet.

FAQ

Is Flop a Bittensor competitor?

Both pay in a native token for AI work, but Bittensor is a network of many subnets with their own incentives, while Flop is a single chain for agent-paid inference. Flop is not live yet.

How do validators differ in Flop and Bittensor?

In Bittensor, validators score miners within a subnet. In Flop's draft, validators record inference proofs in blocks, need a 1.2M FLOP stake and are capped at 1,000 seats.

Is FLOP or TAO launched?

TAO is live. $FLOP is not launched; genesis is targeted for Q1 2027 (provisional).
